Jan 24, Sandra Loutsenhizer rated it it was amazing The Virginia Military Institute was one of the last hold outs for admitting women. They vigorously fought the coming of women in court for several years but all the while prepared for their arrival. They were determined to not water down or change any of their traditions and standards of physical fitness or to dishonor themselves by having a rash of sexual harrassment incidents as had occurred at other military institutions. Although I’ve had a negative opinion of VMI for many years, after readi The Virginia Military Institute was one of the last hold outs for admitting women. Although I’ve had a negative opinion of VMI for many years, after reading this book I had a greater understanding and respect for their traditions and goals. I also had a greater appreciation for all the work that had to be done to prepare for the women’s arrival.

They must be unmarried, and have no legal dependents, physically fit for enrollment in the Reserve Officer Training Corps ROTC , and be graduates of an accredited secondary school or have completed an approved homeschool curriculum. Eligibility is not restricted to Virginia residents, although it is more difficult to gain an appointment as a non-resident, because VMI has a goal that no more than 45 percent of cadets come from outside Virginia.
Virginia residents receive a discount in tuition, as is common at most state-sponsored schools. These fees can be misleading, because VMI’s endowment enables VMI to meet a substantial amount of a cadet’s financial need before the cadet needs loans. Of the students enrolled in , 66 were African-American, 39 were Asian, 34 were Hispanic and 71 were women.

Chad Groening The attorney general of Virginia is disappointed over the U. The high court last Monday turned aside an appeal from the State of Virginia, which wanted to preserve traditional mealtime prayers at VMI. A lower court had earlier ruled that group prayers before evening meals at the school violate separation of church and state. The Supreme Court’s action means that ruling will stand. The case arose when two cadets asked the school to change the prayer ceremony, and sued when VMI refused.
Carrie Cantrell is a spokeswoman for Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore , who had hoped the high court would consider his appeal of the lower-court ruling. That decision banned the recitation of grace by VMI cadets on the ground that the prayers violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. Cantrell maintains that simply was not the case. Senate, and the U. House of Representatives incorporate voluntary prayer when opening their sessions.

Snow was clear as the carriages returned from a face-lift they received in Kentucky. William Steen, Steen Cannon and Ordinance Works, said “When I heard we were going to get the opportunity to make carriages of the four gospels I got excited. This is a once in a lifetime project. We were thrilled to be apart of it. The wooden replicas had to be replaced every decade. They were made smaller and painted red to set them apart from regular carriages because they were moved by cadets rather than horses.

Honestly, if he really wanted to he could have stopped, no one forced him to keep going, yes they may have said things to him but I know that there was in no way that he was physically forced to keep going. Evan’s made a choice to keep going and pushed himself to the limit, which shows just how strong he was.
This was an accident and clearly no one could have know what was going to happen. Not even Evan’s himself. If anyone would have known, then obviously we would not be having this conversation. You need to stop pointing fingers and be there for your BR’s and stop with all the anger towards the RDC and the upperclassmen. How would you feel if you were in their shoes?
Seriously a kid died under their supervision by reasons which they could not have prevented. Get off you high horse and be there for your class and the VMI community In addition to this, if the rat line is so hard and difficult and abusive, how the hell are you able to take this much free time to write all your comments. The rat line has gotten easier in the past few years and this year is no different.
Just imagine if you were in the ratline 40 years ago, the difficult of a march and being called names would be the least of your personal worries, remember the RDC was allowed to have physical contact with the Rats back then. And get back to being a rat and focus on being part of your class and community rather than against it.

Central to this campaign was Ulysses S. Union General Franz Sigel had been sent to apply pressure on a key agricultural region, the Shenandoah Valley. The Confederates had used the valley very effectively in , when Stonewall Jackson kept three Federal armies occupied while keeping pressure off of Richmond. Lee was struggling against Grant and was badly outnumbered.
Dating happens.” VMI would like to have approximately women in its 1, member corps–though no cap will be placed on women’s admissions. That said, Captain Tugman maintains that this will not be easy, that it takes a “special type of girl” to enroll and graduate from VMI.
I being male, the dating scene is few and far between. Instead of wanting to date us, they hate us—at least when it comes to dating us. Being a female myself at a mostly male military college, I have had this experience and witnessed it first-hand. We have to wear the same uniform that the men do and we have to have our hair back in a bun. So because of this, it is degrading for a male cadet to go out with a female cadet—also known as a shedet, in more offensive terms.
Therefore, the guys steer clear of us when it comes to dating, which is unfortunate. Additionally, some of the guys who do recognize that we have proved ourselves still find it weird to date us because they look at us more like sisters than as a date. So instead of dating the girls at VMI, the guys date girls at nearby civilian colleges. This is where they look for hook-ups, dating, and relationships. But when there is, the guys are always seen leaving on the weekends to go hang out with their girlfriends at civilian colleges.
Also, we have a ballroom dance club that meets on Friday nights and some girls from a neighboring all-girls school come to the club and dance with the boys that attend and there have been a few budding romances from that as well. There are actually pretty many of these, surprisingly. I really look up to these couples a lot. Another option is to go out of town for a date.
