Originally posted by linbe: Greyhound provides fuel efficient, low priced transportation to most of the country on thin or negative profit margins, why is Amtrak being kept around with government subsidies? What compelling advantage does Amtrak have over Greyhound. There is a lot of historical precedent in almost every country on the planet to have rail travel and maintenance supported in some way by the government.
It’s one of those “national pride” sorts of things.

THORN tower was built in and at the time it represented a bold form if new technology on the traditionalist Pennsylvania Railroad. The PRR had been a strong proponent of the traditional block system with Block and Interlocking Stations spaced even intervals along the line with Block Operators passing trains from one to another. As the PRR was a wealthy railroad and could afford the expense of building interlocking plants where many other railroads would make do with hand throw switches and the Automatic Block System.

Under a new proposal just released the quasi-public passenger rail company, the Cardinal would leap from 6 passes through Charlottesville each week to Southbound, the train would originate at Penn Station at 6: Westbound, Chicago awaits, but it’s 22 hours and hopefully a good night’s sleep away. More likely, Charlottesville passengers might wish to try their luck at the new casino three hours away at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs.

Sleeping on Amtrak Jul 8, , Thanks a lot BPh. You’re right about the upgrade charge to a roomette. You pay one accommodation charge over and above the chaircar transportation charge whether you are one or two people. To be honest with you, I’d suggest taking the chair car of that one short night. The seats are large; about the size of first class airline seats but with more leg-room and leg rests. The drawback, as BluePhantom notes, is that you are in a car with 40 other people trying to sleep: It’s like a red-eye flight.
Somebody is going to snore. However, once the dawn dawns you have a whole day of beautiful scenery, the lounge car so-so bloody mary’s , the dining car and and experience you can’t get driving through or flying over. I’m a bit confused as to your pricing a trip from Texas to Seattle. That’s too many nights on the train for chair-car.

Amtrak engineer commented on speed seconds before crash, NTSB says Federal investigators reviewed video and audio that detailed the final moments inside the locomotive before the derailment. On the footage reviewed by National Transportation Safety Board investigators, the crew were not seen using any personal electronic devices before the crash. About six seconds before the derailment, the engineer made a comment regarding an overspeed condition.
His actions were consistent with the train’s brakes being applied just before the recording ended. It does not appear the engineer applied the emergency brakes on the recording. The recording ends as the train begin to tilt and the crew braces for impact.

The reviewers say that it goes into great detail about every aspect of Amtrak long distance travel. I hope you like it! Now on to the original blog post below I had some difficulty knowing exactly what to expect – I knew the roomette would be small, but I was trying to figure out exactly how small, since we are 2 adults and a baby and would need to have a few things onboard with us.
The images on the Amtrak site don’t really give you the whole picture literally. I found this film on YouTube which was very helpful, but in hindsight, I don’t think it gave me the detail I was looking for. There are many other YouTube videos, so you might try those too. This one was the longest so I assumed the most detailed.
There have been many conversations around the web about what it’s really like to take Amtrak for long trips, so I want to give you the most accurate and true depiction. We decided to get a roomette for the first and longest leg of our travel on the California Zephyr. Beginning in the nineteenth century in the United States, a vast system of railroads was developed that moved goods and people across great distances, facilitated the settlement of large portions of the country, created towns and cities, and unified a nation. Early railways were a far cry from the great system of railroads that were built in the nineteenth century and that continue to be used today.
The earliest railways in the United States were short, wooden railways built by quarries and mines along which horses pulled loads to nearby water ways.

Most on-board staff know the deal although you do need to inform your car attendant and introduce your new bed buddy so the attendant can recognize the new face in the sleeper car and be accountable for all the passengers in case of an accident. Amtrak clientele is diverse. They have three market niches pretty much to themselves — the obese who are too broad for airline seats, the neurotic who are afraid of flying, and the geriatrics who are too weak to travel any other way using the special handicapped bedrooms.
None of these groups are of much interest. Better are the college students and other young people moving about the country. Foreigners seem to love our trains, especially Australians and Germans, and both nationalities are friendly and eager to talk to Americans. The largest single group, however, are retired people who usually travel as couples.
They tend to be friendly enough, but just not your focus. The young American women and the recently divorced are your prime targets, depending on your own age.
